Guest Post: 10 Essential Things to Pack while Traveling

A few weeks ago, the beautiful Tanvi from The Fabulous Life of Not-So-Rich and Infamous asked me to be a guest blogger on her site.  Tanvi’s blog is one of my daily reads and has a bit of everything: movie reviews, scrumptious recipes, exotic locales, fitness tips, and musings on fashion.  Tanvi covers all of these topics with wit and humor while looking like a true fashionista (and she has a killer shoe collection!).

Not only was I honored by her request, she also inspired me to begin my own monthly guest post series.  Tanvi agreed to be the first contributor, and came up with a topic that is always timely:  ten travel essentials!  See below for her picks, and let us know in the comments if you have any to add (for instance: music is a travel essential for me.  I have to bring some tunes with me each time I travel). Read on for her travel wisdom!

I am really excited to be guest blogging on Beautifully Invisible today.  I love traveling.  I cannot go for more than two months without going out of town.  This is what I have learnt from my frequent travels: it never hurts to be prepared.  This is the list of some basic essentials I believe one should pack regardless of whether it is a work-related or leisure trip.

  1. Small First Aid Box.  You never know when you might need a band aid [shoe bite!].  Better to be prepared than to be in pain.  Specially when you are away from home.  You would find these at any pharmacy.

  3. Travel Size Toiletries:  Specially with travel (luggage) restrictions increasing on a minute to minute basis it is only smart to carry travel size now.  But it is important that you do.  Sometimes you cannot even rely on the hotel to provide the best quality and often they run out sooner than your own travel size ones.

  5. Pair of comfortable walking shoes (Formal/Casual):  Whether you are away on work or holiday a comfortable pair of shoes will take you a long way [literally and figuratively, both!].

  7. Pair of versatile heels:  However, also be prepared for a night out, even if it is not on the itinerary. Never leave without a gorgeous pair of heels packed.  You will be sorry, if you don’t!  It is almost like the Murphy’s Law!

  9. Pair of comfortable Jeans:   Again, you might be out of town on work or on a vacation, but a pair of Jeans is something that comes handy at the least expected time.

  11. A dress for an evening out:  Just like the heels, it is always better to be prepared than to be sorry!  And how much space can a cute LBD possibly take? Right?

  13. A Book:  Even if you are not a ‘reading’ person I would suggest to keep a book handy.  They are a great companion when you are stuck at airport due to delay, long transit, missed flight [!].  Books are also a good back-up plan, in case you have a rift with your travel companion [I am just saying!].

  15. Written Address & Phone No. of the destination:  Although we all rely on our Blackberries and iPhones for everything now, I would still suggest carrying a written/printed form of address and whereabouts of your destination.  You never know when these things will die on you.  And chargers won’t help while you are on-the-go… isn’t it?

  17. Some easy to eat snacks:  Always have some snacks handy in your bag.  Preferably both salted and sweet, like a bag of nuts/mini pretzels and jellybeans.  Personally, I always carry some protein bar. They fill me up for good 1-2 hours.

  19. Emergency Cash & Credit Cards [but separately]:  Mostly the world runs on plastic today but one should always have some cash for emergencies. However, keep it separate from the cards so that if one is stolen or lost you have the other to fall back on!

I’m terribly late, but love this post! I found myself nodding along to each of them. Especially the books! I went on a roadtrip at Christmastime and managed to read three books in the car – in just one half of the trip. Ironically my Christmas gift was a Nook (Barnes & Noble’s e-reader) so now I have the most delightfully easy-to-pack gadget that, at the moment, is probably holding about 100 books. Perfect for a bookworm like me. (:

I’ve heard great things about the Nook…. I need to get one of those… right now I am still old-fashioned and read actual books, with paper pages and everything! LOL

This is great! I agree, never go on any trip without a book (or in the car without an audiobook!). This is a fab blog, so happy to find it and definitely will be following!

I am the opposite – I’ll take something dressy, and forget pajama’s. That has happened to me before!

Great list! I would also bring music. I would go insane in the car as I already don’t like long trips. I would also bring extra clothes, ha ha ha. I always seem to over pack!

Totally agree with all her tips! Like Tanvi, after 2 months I start itching to leave town, and I follow everything she’s mentioned here! (Another tip: bring TWO books. In case your travel companion forgets one and tries to steal yours! :P)
