First Look: Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe

Every now and again, the subject of who could/should play Marilyn Monroe in a film comes up. Names ranging from Scarlett Johansson to Angelina Jolie to Christina Hendricks come up, and the debates rage on.

One name that was never on any of my lists was Michelle Williams. I never looked at Michelle and thought “yup, that right there is Marilyn!”

Until now.

Here’s a first look at Michelle Williams as Marilyn in “My Week With Marilyn.”

I dunno, I think Michelle has about as much sex appeal as a doorknob, so I am not sure it would work …

It’s funny you say this. I used to feel the same way when she was on Dawson’s Creek WAY back when. I couldn’t understand why so many guys I knew thought she was sexy…. I didn’t see it.

Today, I think she could definitely pull of the Marilyn look. The sexiness? Guess we’ll see!

She can definitely pull it off, I didn’t even realize that was her in the first picture.

That’s my point exactly. She can definitely pass for her looks wise. We’ll see if she can exude the same sensuality onscreen!

I was really surprised when I saw the image. I mentioned this in a comment above, but I used to watch her in Dawson’s Creek way back when and she used to drive me crazy. I didn’t think she could act, and I never would have considered her for a role like this. She’s come a long way since then!

I think Scarlet is the one most people see. I wonder who else could do Marilyn that we’ve never thought of?

I could see Scarlett as Marilyn quite easly. Christina…I’m not sure. Definitely not Angelina though. That would probably be a disaster.

Wow. Michelle really pulls it off doesn’t she? I’m amazed. She looks so fantastic.

Surprisingly, I’ve seen some images of Angelina where I think she could almost do it. Certainly, I think she is a better actress than Michelle. Now I am really interested in seeing how Michelle pools off the character. She has teh look down, but what about the personality?

She looks gorgeous! I figured she’d be able to pull off the visual part, much more so than some of the others they were considering. What I’m really loving is Julia Ormond as Vivien Leigh. Marilyn is such a character at this point that I don’t much care about the accuracy of the person portraying her, but for someone to play Viv onscreen is pretty big business. She’s one of my favorite classic actresses and her look is so distinct. I think Julia was a great choice. Kenneth Branagh as Larry, on the other hand, seems utterly bizarre. I’ve heard marvelous things about his performances, though.

Julia Ormond, really? Hmmm. I am not quite sure how I feel about that. She’s a fabulous actress – but I don’t know if she has the right look for Vivien. I think I am undecided on that one. Not that I can really think of anyone better.

Kenneth Branagh is a great actor, and i feel like he is somewhat of a chameleon. He can play anyone.

I think they had Catherine Zeta Jones, but she quit in order to be with Michael Douglas during his cancer treatments? Something like that? I think CZJ has a unique look, as did Viv. I can’t see anyone capturing the Vivien look like Michelle Williams captured the Marilyn look, but Julia is a great actress so I’m sure she’ll be able to bring the character of Vivien to life at the least.

That’s what I’ve heard, so I’m excited to see his performance for sure. (:

CZJ is stunning – I think she could emulate the look better, yes, but I also think Julia is a better actress. It will be fun to see the final product!

I can see it. Marilyn is on the cover of Vanity Fair this month. It seems her diaries are being published soon for the first time ever, so I expect to see a lot of interest in her the next few months.

That issue of Vanity Fair has been sitting on my desk the past week, and I still haven’t had a chance to look at it. I never know how to feel about private diaries being published – a part of me is curious, but a part of me hates the ideas of reading thoughts someone believed would be private from the world.

    i can see it, definitely.

but to be honest, i’m so tired of seeing celebrities do the marilyn monroe thing. i love marilyn as much as the next girl but all this over-saturation is making her kind of boring and common place. but maybe it’s just me. =P

It isn’t just you – I sometimes feel that way too. But i also feel like we have yet to see a truly great “Marilyn” performance. Who knows, maybe this will be it!
