There has been a lot of talk recently about Karlie Kloss’s December 2011 Vogue Italia shoot.  The buzz turned into outright controversy when the publication decided to pull one of the images from their site.  You can read more about that here.

Under normal circumstances I would likely blog about the controversy but, today at least, I want to focus on a different shoot.  Karlie—who happens to be one of my favorite models—looks absolutely amazing in Numéro #129.  Lensed by Greg Kadel and styled by Elizabeth Sulcer, the images are as raw and gritty as they are luxurious.  Karlie wears a number of different designers throughout the shoot, including Cavalli, McQueen, Pucci and Ferragamo, and each new image seems to be better than the last.  My personal favorite?  The TOM FORD, of course!

I’ll warn you now that this post is picture heavy, but I think it is worth it!

Amazing, right?  I can’t get enough of the clothing and accessories and I love the saturated color. It makes me happy

It’s been a while since an editorial caught my eye simply because I was drawn to the fashion featured in it.

Not the controversy.

Not the relationship to Tom Ford.

Not particularly breathtaking or haunting imagery…  just a pure, unadulterated appreciation of the styling and fashions themselves.

Yes, it had been quite some time since and editorial turned my head for that purpose. Yet that is exactly what happened when I saw these:

Photographer Chad Pitman captured these stunning shots of Julija Steponaviciute for Numéro China #5 (January/February 2011).   The editorial, simply entitled “Blue Moon” is one of my favorites so far in 2011.

Check out the styling by Charles Varenne:  Burberry Prorsum. Louis Vuitton, Alexis Bittar, Balmain, Fendi, Cavalli, and Christian Louboutin, to name a few.  He did such a phenomenal job with this shoot that I don’t know if I could ever pick a favorite look.

Constance Jablonski for Numéro No. 117

You’ve probably heard about the latest fashion editorial controversy:  Constance Jablonski styled in varying degrees of blackface and an afro in the October 2010 issue of Numéro Magazine.

This isn’t the first time this practice has caused controversy in the fashion industry. Last year, French Vogue caused a stir when they featured a blackfaced Lara Stone in an editorial. More recently, Karl Lagerfield shot Claudia Schiffer in blackface (amongst other looks). Without a doubt, the use of blackface always leads to some controversy and increased publicity for a publication. What do you think of this practice? My thoughts are: why couldn’t they use a stunner like Joan Smalls or Liya Kebede in the shoot instead? Is it really necessary to take a woman with fair skin and style her in an afro and blackface, when there are beautiful black models out there? Personally, I like the late 60’s, early 70’s vibe of the editorial itself, I just wish they had gone with a different model.

Illamasqua’s Art of Darkness

If you have ever been on the hunt for bright, dramatic makeup that was also high-quality, you may have stumbled across Illamasqua. I came across the Art of Darkness promotional film for their Fall Collection, and no matter what you think about the video, you can’t argue that it’s a unique and memorable approach! They definitely made great use of the product and created something unique with the film.

Lipstick at all Times
