Good afternoon
Thank you for this excellent paper.
Two comments : Marie Vernet was unemployed when she met Worth that is fact stand on several documents established at the time of their wedding. So he did not met het at Opigez. She was staying home with her mother in Paris while the father was a taxe employee at Clermont Ferrand but yes she most likely worked there some time after her wedding. Was she the wearing gowns made by him ... yes... Was she doing the mannequin ??? not sure at all. Opigez was a very conservative man. But A recent paper says that later she was doing the mannequin at the 8 th rue de la Paix. I like this idea
I do not know about Mrs Feuillet (first time I hear about that) but why the empress did not invite Worth when she noticed the gowns ?????. I personally stick to Paulina Metternich story as told in her memories.
You are perfectly right concerning Winterhalter painting. This is for me a fact as the style is perfectly recognizable; You know that Opigez did not want to put Worth name forward. That is why he finally left.
Yes very good concerning the one year stay with Lewis and Allenby ; this is often forgotten or wrongly mentioned as its all londonian carrer. At the age of eleven he worked first in a printer shop as his mother could not keep him besides him when she was a house keeper in the english meaning of the term i.e. like in Downton Abbey

An amazing article and CFW deserves more recognition in the fashion world. The NCCD in Sleaford should stage an exhibition to celebrate his work and others with tentative connections to Lincolnshire and the industry - Isabella Blow, Denys Finch Hatton, Edith Sitwell come to mind. Let's celebrate these people!

Very interesting! I always felt like most of the focus on fashion was on the rise of ready-to-wear, but I think this is equally, if not moreso, interesting! Ambitious fashion designer strives to catch the attention of royalty and reshape fashion as a whole - sounds like a movie!

Speaking of which, I read somewhere that Emmy Rossum's costume actually was modeled after that gown. She has the stars in her hair and everything. It is stunning!

[...] It seems as though the hyper-marketing of fashion through shows and celebrity appearances is a recent phenomenon. But in the 1850′s, Charles Frederick Worth catapulted himself from a mere dressmaker to the first famous couturier – and not just on design skills alone. Worth was an excellent self-promoter, and created the first seasonal fashion shows, as well as dressing his wife and muse, Marie, in his latest creations and taking her out on the town.
