LINK LOVE with a TWIST: February 28, 2011

LINK LOVE with a TWIST, February 28, 2011

This week’s Link Love is full of exciting and thought-provoking topics.  Our nominated bloggers delved into a variety of subjects including the history of black face, the marketing of makeup to women of color, blog analytics, self-acceptance and more.  I hope you’ll take a few moments to visit each of these blogs and let the authors know how their posts resonated with you.

*********

The DUSK Zone – Golden Age:    When it comes to being inspired by her follow bloggeristas, this was quite a week for Bella Q of The Citizen Rosebud!  This is the first of three submissions that Bella made to Link Love.  She told me I could choose which to include… so I included them all so you could see, as did I,  why she was so inspired by each.  I’ve been a fan of The DUSK Zone for some time, but she is a new discovery for Bella.  She says “[A] treasure I’ve discovered this week is a beautiful blogger who writes the Dusk Zone. This post is her succinct manifesto on accepting her body in her 40′s. I LOVE!”

Everything Just So – Set in Style: The Jewelry of Van Cleef & Arpels:  This was another of Bella’s faves this week.  She says “this tantalizing review of Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry exhibition now showing at the Cooper-Hewitt National Museum makes me want to go see it for myself.  Consider this post a guided tour with interesting tidbits and facts thrown in for good measure.”  Sounds good to me!

Fashion RECON: Wednesday Webbies: Blog Analytics Dissected Series:  Fabienne Jach of The House in the Clouds was so excited about this post that she actually submitted it twice! 🙂   “I’m totally digging Yvonne of Fashion Recon’s Wednesday Webbies series,” she says.  “It’s really helpful to get a breakdown of analytics in bite-size pieces. She uses her own stats to walk us through the results. It’s pretty cool.”  I agree completely, and look forward to future posts in this series as well!

The Girl Who Stole the Eiffel Tower – Raising Helena: How One Woman’s “Faux Pas” Inspired Me: Fashion is about celebrating one’s individuality and personal style. The truly fashionable own their style and don’t apologize for it.   I picked Casee Marie’s post as my selection this week because she celebrates a woman who does exactly that – the always original, always fabulous and always fashionable… Helena Bonham Carter.

Hey Bella – Repeat after me… “I am Not Your JiggaBoo”: This selection by Courtney of Those Graces is a great pick that delves into a really interesting topic.  “Ty talks about Beyonce’s decision to pose for L’Officiel in black face in honor of a Nigerian dancer,” says Courtney. “I think she’s brought up an interesting conversation on the history of black face.”

Miss Moss – mary katrantzou a/w 2011:  Does anyone disagree that it can often be difficult to find a blogger who posts runway photos in an original way?  Thankfully for us, Marissa of The Well-Appointed Catwalk did just that!  She shares that “Miss Moss put together a brilliant, fun post on the Mary Katrantzou show, pairing her pieces with oriental ceramics on auction.”

style activist – Bidding Winter Farewell:  I love this submission by Casee Marie of The Girl Who Stole the Eiffel Tower.  She says she submitted this post because “the combination of Erika’s great writing, her killer outfit (and makeup, hair, etc. etc.) and the spectacular photography really wowed me.  The way she styled a detailed dress with detailed stockings inspired my creative side, too.”  I couldn’t have said it better myself!

Those Graces – Natural Ivory to True Ebony: Expanding Makeup Options for People of Color: This is the final selection picked by the lovely Bella Q of The Citizen Rosebud.  Bella shares that this post was so good that reading  it actually gave her the chills!  “Courtney, a premier feminist-fashion blogger, touches upon the subject of marketing make-up to women of color.  Oh this resonates so well with me!  She plans to write some follow-ups to this post.”  (Note: Courtney has already written at least one follow-up posts and it is just as good!  Check it out here.)

Thrift Eye -The fat and skinny of it: or stop obsessing over Crystal Renn: Franca of Oranges and Apples submitted this thought-provoking post because “[it] challenges the negative reaction to Crystal Renn’s recent weight loss and is a great reminder that body acceptance applies to everyone, of all sizes!”

Beautifully Invisible – Thank You, Tom Ford:  When I first noticed that Casee Marie had submitted this post as one of her choices for this week I wasn’t going to include it.  Although I was deeply touched by her words, including it seems a bit self-serving, don’t you think?  But when I noticed that Kristy Eléna of Full Time Fabulous also selected this post, I changed my mind.   I don’t know if the post deserves their accolades, but I am thankful that my personal story – combined with genius of Tom Ford – seems to have resonated with them!  Casee Marie said “I loved this post because B’s voice was strong, her words resonated with me and she also gave me insight into Mr. Ford’s past work that I hadn’t experienced at the time. It was an epic post that moved me, and it was just a flat-out great read.” She made me blush with her kind words, as did Kristy when she said “I love it.  It’s perfection.  I love knowing where your love for fashion came from. Such an inspiration!”  Thanks ladies – I am thrilled that my post touched you both this past week!

I am really enjoying this series. My only complaint is that there are too many good things out there! Thank you for featuring some a great set of posts. I am so stoked to see all 3 of my submissions made it- they were sooo good!

Since you’re all techy, could you make a widget for my side bar with a LINK LOVE MONDAY at B.I.. I would love to have a direct link to share with my readers! xo. -Bella Q

Thank you Bella – I am glad that everyone seems to be enjoying this, but I know how you feel. I need an extra 8 hours a day just to catch up with all the blogs I follow and the lists keep growing! 🙂

That is a great idea about a widget – thank you for WANTING to do add one to your side bar! I was thinking about doing something similar for my own site but haven’t quite figured out the details yet. Let me think about it, and if anyone sees this comment and has a suggestion, let me know please!

You simply cannot imagine my shock when I saw the banner you made… saw my face. Read your words. I am humbled, so so honoured. Thank you.

    That banner is….wow…

I don’t quite understand how Link LOve works!
…but I had read your Tom Ford piece and I loved it! Particularly because I had some pieces from his ’95 collection! I LOVED that collection!

Of course you should and would get put forward for recognition and awards. Excellence and honesty combine to create beauty and your words make you… beautifully visible.

It was my pleasure to include you, but thecredit truly goes to Bella Q for nominating your post! She is the one who said “[A] treasure I’ve discovered this week is a beautiful blogger who writes the Dusk Zone. This post is her succinct manifesto on accepting her body in her 40′s. I LOVE!”

I just share her opinion, and shared her thoughts with everyone else!

Link Love is meant to be a way to share posts that touched us every week. To participate all you have to do is share the link to a post you loved and a brief explanation of why you chose that post.

I compile everything together and post the full list each Monday.

If you would like to submit something for inclusion next week, you can do so here: http://linklove.beautifully-invisible.com/2011/02/link-love-with-a-twist-march-7-2011/

I hope that helps… and thank you for your VERY kind words about me 🙂

Oh wow! I am so honored to be included in this list! When I saw my name I blinked twice and almost cried! Thank you so much for the Link Love nomination!! When I started the Wednesday Webbies series I wondered how they would be received, if people would care to read about tech stuff on a fashion blog.
I appreciate being listed with all these other fabulous bloggers – you made my week!

I was very excited when I noticed that Fabienne nominated you – I think the Wednesday Webbies series is brilliant, and look forward to reading future installments!

Your blog is a great mix of fashion and other subjects – by doing this is a weekly series people have the option to skip on Wednesdays if they chose, but hopefully they won’t because the information you provide is invaluable AND easy to understand!

I am so glad it is being enjoyed and helping others understand what’s going on “behind the scenes.” So far with Part I & II – when I first post it I wonder if anyone will care to read it, if it’s a turn off, blahblah (insert self-doubt here.) Being nominated because of one of these posts was so heartening. I can’t tell you how much it means to me!!

Thank you, Kristy! I was really touched that both you and Casee thought my post was worthy of inclusion so I changed my mind and added it to the list.

As long as a comment is in before I publish the post I will try to add it in, I just like to have them in by Saturday morning so I can start putting everything together! Thank you for participating and I look forward to seeing your submission for Monday! 🙂

Thank you so much for including my post, B! I’m overwhelmed, really. It was something I had been wanting to do for a long time and it felt like one of those situations where, when you finally get it done, you just don’t feel like it’s quite as powerful as what was in your head. Maybe I didn’t write it as well as I could have, did I make all the points I wanted to make, etc. etc. But I’ve found that the longer I wait to post something the more I build up my expectations for it and that’s not always healthy. But it’s a learning experience, this blogging thing. I’m just extremely grateful for the support and I’m glad the message of the post was so well-received and appreciated.

And so happy to see your Tom Ford post up there! It really was a gem.

Casee, your post was lovely. I don’t think it could have been any better than it was, but I know exactly what you mean. I actually just left you a comment on your own blog explaining how my Tom Ford post started off as one thing and morphed into something else altogether. Sometimes things like that happen, and when they do we never seem to be quite satisfied.

I think we must be too hard on ourselves because your post was brilliant!
